Methods for Surface Modification of Nano Aluminum Oxide powder

Nano aluminum oxide powder is a widely used material, especially in the field of nanotechnology, due to its unique physicochemical properties such as high surface area, high thermal stability, and excellent catalytic activity. However, the surface properties of nano-aluminum oxide play an important role in its performance in many applications. Therefore, surface modification of nano-aluminum oxide is essential to improve its properties for specific applications. In this article, we discuss one of the effective surface modification methods of nano-aluminum oxide, which involves using a silane coupling agent (KH-560).


The Surface Modification Method


The surface modification method involves using a silane coupling agent, KH-560, to modify the surface of nano-aluminum oxide. The KH-560 was hydrolyzed in water (pH 7) for 1 hour at 60°C with a stirring rate of 1500 r/min. After hydrolysis, the KH-560 solution was added to the nano-aluminum oxide dispersion (40% ethanol) with a KH-560: ethanol: water ratio of 20:9:72, and the pH value was adjusted to 4 using 40% acetic acid. The reaction mixture was stirred for 4 hours at 60°C and then filtered. The obtained product was washed thoroughly with ethanol and dried at 60°C for 3 hours.


The Characterization of Modified Nano-Aluminum Oxide


The modified nano-aluminum oxide was characterized by measuring its oil absorption value, viscosity, FTIR and SEM. The IR spectrum showed that the KH-560 was successfully grafted onto the surface of the nano-aluminum oxide particles, indicating the successful surface modification of the nano-aluminum oxide. The SEM images showed that the modified nano-aluminum oxide particles had smooth edges and no obvious aggregation. The oil absorption value of the modified nano-aluminum oxide was decreased by around 43.4% compared to unmodified nano-aluminum oxide. Furthermore, the viscosity of the composite material was decreased by approximately 16.1%.
